This coming Thursday, October 2nd, I'm doing a choreographed glow poi & hoop performance at Warren Wilson College with Melmac of Asheville Hoops.

We're looking for someone who could video tape it and then give us a digital version. Our performance is only about 9 minutes, as it is part of a larger show...so you wouldn't have to be there very long at all.

any takers?

I'll get ya a nice bottle o wine! :)

Seems that there's gonna be a contingent of people with glow toys dancin at the drum circle this coming Friday.

So, come one come all! Bring your glow toys (poi, staff, hoop etc) for some spin jam action! The more the merrier!! It'd be sweet if we had a bunch of glow peeps spinnin out there. Too bad we can't have an all out fire fest, but glow is still awesome!

Get your glow on at the drum circle, then head to WACK at Bobos!

~peace~

Downtown - Saturday 10 A.M.
ASHEVILLE ALTERNATIVE FITNESS DUO CONCLUDES
“CONSCIOUS MOVEMENT ACROSS AMERICA” TOUR IN HOMETOWN

Weeklong Wellness Extravaganza Helps Relieve Stress, Heal Communities

Free Wellness Walk Aug. 30 Shares Health Benefits of Tai Chi and Qigong

Asheville residents Michael Clark and Accem Scott are best known for their “Conscious Movement” cable television series on URTV (Charter cable channel 20) and for sharing “meditation in motion” with hundreds of local people by hosting celebrations of World Tai Chi & Qigong Day. Now they return to their hometown for the climax of Conscious Movement Across America, a four-city tour that offers a weeklong series of wellness events, many of them for free.

“We decided to end our tour with a big homecoming that offers something for everyone,” said certified teacher Michael Clark, founder of Heaven and Earth Tai Chi, “The whole week will be jam-packed with events. From free lectures and walks to mind-body fitness workshops and a screening of our TV show “The Best of Conscious Movement.” URTV has declared Aug. 24-31 “Conscious Movement Week” and will broadcast the series every evening from 10-11 p.m. Mission Hospitals even asked us to put on a stress-reduction workshop for employees.”
Asheville-area residents will be able to sample for free the once closely guarded Chinese health secrets of Tai Chi and Qigong (pronounced “chee gung”) at a Free Wellness Walk Saturday, Aug. 30, 10 a.m. – 12 noon, from City-County Plaza downtown (College St. & Spruce St.) to Montford Park. Participants will enjoy a leisurely walk combined with mini-classes in moving meditation and fun ways to take care of themselves.

“This walk is a real homecoming for us,” said Accem Scott, an African-American martial artist and naturopath, author of the American Barefoot Doctor’s Manual, “Montford Park is where we held the first Conscious Movement Day in 2004.”

Asheville is host to one of four such walks across the country as part of Conscious Movement Across America, a grass-roots approach to self-healing and healing our communities, founded by Clark and Scott. Conscious Movement Across America aims to bring health, wellness and fellowship to all Americans across racial, economic and religious boundaries. The Free Wellness Walks and accompanying workshops teach folks how to relieve stress and stimulate their body’s internal medicine through mind-body techniques like Tai Chi and Qigong.

Clark and Scott are a bi-racial teaching team with more than 30 years of combined experience. “We want to reach out to all ethnic groups, which is why we included a free workshop at Shiloh Community Center that serves many African-Americans,” said Scott, “Michael and I call ourselves ‘Tao Brothers,’ because it reflects our mission of teaching people mind-body harmony and racial harmony. We believe that as people heal themselves, they'll be able to begin healing our planet. This is the kind of world we want to live in, and we believe others do, too.”

Tai Chi and Qigong are low-impact health exercises that coordinate breath, movement and meditation. Western science supports these mind-body arts as complementary medicine, recognizing their key benefits like relieving stress, improving balance, boosting the immune system and enhancing mental focus.

For more information, contact Tao Brothers: www.tao-brothers.com, taobrothers@gmail.com, phone: (828) 280-7287

------- Okay everyone.. Here is a good chance to get out there and hoop or dance - in the street! - in a parade. I know these guys. They invited me to come hoop. they mentioned bellydance on the radio..
10 a.m. – 12 noon, from City-County Plaza downtown (College St. & Spruce St.) to Montford Park!
Get out there and MOVE! All are invited.

Visiting Asheville this weekend - need ideas!

Hello!!!! OK so me and my best friend Jodie are visiting Asheville this weekend, and b/c we are insufferable and trying to be economical, we are probably going to couchsurf on Friday/Saturday (houses still TBD). Then we are staying in a hostel on Sunday.

SO we are looking for cool stuff to do in Asheville OTHER than the street fest, and were wondering if anyone had cool suggestions.

We're not mainstream ppl, and we love interesting/quirky stuff.

Any ideas?

We're going to hit the road 8am tomorrow - if you have ideas, call me at 407-473-2286. It's a LOOOOONG drive, so we will be available to talk. :o) Thank you!!!!!!!!
Room for Rent in West, west asheville

The Pirate Cove has a room open again due to the last tenant leaving abruptly and without notice or settling up. In six years of renting rooms out to all types of artist and musicians I have never had anyone screw me out of a dollar until now. Well, I am still not charging a deposit or making you sign a lease. So if you need a room we are located in west west asheville (spivey Mounatin area) we have decks, hot tubs, trails etc. Rent is $325 a month plus i/4 of utilities. You must be laid back, open minded and truthful. Dishonest people suck and ruin the good times for us all. Give me a call at 828-335-3567.

my friend, paul, is searching for his dog.
i know you peeps are good peeps, i'm from there, and know many of you...
please help in any ways that you can.
contact me directly in a PM, please, as i only joined this tribe to post this topic and am leaving now.
Blessed Be Beloveds!

here is his post:

my dog gandolph,

http://www. myspace. com/298055506

is still missing in action in asheville, north carolina. if you are in asheville, or know or have any "friends" in or around that area -NC, SC, TN, GA please forward this info to them. he was last seen on 6-17 wearing his collar. he is a 75 lb. great dane/greyhound/shephard mix with a scar on his leg from a recent surgery. he is tan with brindle markings. big, beautiful, and graceful; friendly, but quite possibly skittish. it is quite likley at this point that somebody has taken him in. keep your ears and eyes peeled. sooner or later he might turn up. he is the love of my life, and I am dying inside.

thank you for everyone who has already offered suggestions and help.

I am eternally grateful.

love always...paul

A place to bury strangers @ grey eagle sunday.

Sunday is Matt Schnable's birthday.

Now, he's not gonna go around asking for birthday presents. But I'm here to tell you that if you want to make him feel better about getting older, you will come have your mind blown at the Grey Eagle with the rest of us.

On the bands self-titled debut album (editor's note: #1 on both matt & matty's "top ten of 2007"!) they manage to kick up some of the most ferocious feedback since The Jesus & Mary Chain's classic "Psychocandy". Oh and of course they reference the almighty sound of My Bloody Valentine circa "Isn't Anything" and the "You Made Me Realise" single. Much of the thunderous guitar blast you'll hear on this record is the result of Ackermann's other job, building homemade guitar pedals. He has an online store where you can buy them straight from him and even hear examples of how they sound, the website is www.deathbyaudio.net. I won't name them all here, but some of his clients include Lightning Bolt, TV On the Radio, and Serena-Maneesh (with whom A Place to Bury Strangers share some similar qualities). Another nicely executed facet to the album is the contrast between live drums and drum-machine often in the same track. "To Fix the Gash in Your Head" best illustrates this technique by pitting pummeling Ministry-esque beats against a tumultuous wall of fuzz... -- Delusions of Adequacy

8.4 rating on Pitchfork!
"A Place to Bury Strangers can pull beauty out of eardrum-puncturing bleakness..."
The Business of Being Born at UNCA

"Birth: it’s a miracle. A rite of passage. A natural part of life. But more than anything, birth is a business. Compelled to find answers after a disappointing birth experience with her first child, actress Ricki Lake recruits filmmaker Abby Epstein to examine and question the way American women have babies.

The film interlaces intimate birth stories with surprising historical, political and scientific insights and shocking statistics about the current maternity care system. When director Epstein discovers she is pregnant during the making of the film, the journey becomes even more personal.

Should most births be viewed as a natural life process, or should every delivery be treated as a potentially catastrophic medical emergency?"

A screening of The Business of Being Born is taking place tomorrow, January 19, at 2:00 PM at UNCA Humanities Hall. There will be a panel following. Admission is $10 and UNCA students are free.

Regional Appalachian Writer Found Not Dead

Regional Appalachian Writer Found Not Dead
By Anne M. Briggs
12/01/2007, Asheville, NC
Cherokee, NC
Indymedia.org, from annewbriggs@gmail.com
for copy http://www.cherokeeobserver.org, www.pr.com

- Regional, and Internationally published and recognized Appalachian writer, John Johnson, explains why news of his death is very premature and innacurate. His former 'nom de plume', Will M. Cumberland and the corporation formed for that name, are though -

Regional Appalachian writer, John C. Johnson, admitted that he was "not dead" yesterday and that his acquaintances might have taken the death of his nom-de-plume too far.

Johnson, who has recently come back from a hiatus in the mountains, was shocked to learn the news that people were taking the death of the corporation and Cumberland Media, very seriously.

“I had been in the woods, needing a break and wanted to get away for a while.”, he stated. “When I got back, everything seemed a bit haywire.”

Not even certain members of his family knew that the news was originally intended to announce a ceremonial severance from his character role as "Will Cumberland". Johnson, who had originally planned to write under the name for a period of seven years, said the death of Cumberland was purely figurative and needed.

“I was amazed at how many calls I had on my answering machine wondering if I was dead.”, he laughs, “I'm not dead and this was not supposed to be a media stunt. I said I was going to do this seven years ago.”

Johnson thinks that people began to take the role of Will Cumberland the writer more seriously than they took his own life and work. Part of this, he believes, has to do with his professional training as an actor, character development specialist and thespian, a fact not often known about Johnson. He has even received payroll checks addressed to Will Cumberland and was equally amazed that his local Asheville bank would cash them.

When Johnson felt it was time to end the publishing cycle of seven years, he did so by announcing the death of the Cumberland name, the dissolving of the corporation and to let the public know he was no longer using the name.

“I personally thought putting the corporation to rest was going to make a cultural statement. Well, it did, but not as I originally intended it to be. My mistake was letting the close, but small circle of writers that also wrote under the name as well, to announce the death without even telling my own mother, family or friends what we were doing. She, however, probably knew what was up.”

"When you have so much being printed, where I, or my character, was eaten by bears, Bigfoot or in one case, killed by an ex-girlfriend, someone needs to establish just a little bit of clarity.", he added.

News of his nom-de-plume's death created an air of excitement in the Asheville artist and music community.

"Thankfully, thinking folks weren't so ready to accept I was dead. There is a difference between burning up incorporation documents and calling them ashes, to believing there was a real body in that urn. "

Some went so far as to file missing person reports with the local authorities.

One writer even published an obituary under the name of Will Cumberland and also announced it on line. Since almost all the writers involved in the project had ties to the local media, most of the information was passed on without follow up or question. This confused the public, which had assumed Will was a living, breathing and real person.

“Oh Will was very much real in some sense”, Johnson said, “, too real actually, I couldn't even introduce myself as John without some confusion coming up. I got tired of living that way. At some point, it didn't feel authentic. The real me is what I wanted to be.”

"In our society, sadly, corporations are considered real persons, legally. Will Cumberland was an incorporated entity designed for publication."

Famous musicians, actors and writers have often used nom-de-plumes throughout known history. Robert Zimmerman, a famous folk singer, was known by the name stage name, Bob Dylan. To be more readily accepted into the folk scene, he used the last name Dylan.

In this regard, Johnson felt the name Cumberland was appropriate for an Appalachian writer. The Cumberland Plateau is where Johnson earned the name 'Cumberland' after winning some very successful environmental battles against a coal company in that region.

“Cumberland was a beautiful name to have, but one that has a lot of weight, immaturity, baggage and needless garbage attached to it. I felt it was time to end the charade and encourage my friends and family to see me as I actually am.”

Johnson, who is of both Cherokee and English heritages, is planning on focusing more on Appalachian issues, including a new Cherokee Herbal, an English history of the Appalachia with a better understanding of King George's part in the Colonial America and a much needed compilation of Cherokee and Appalachian folklore.

Traveling the Multidimensionality of our Relationships

Have you ever realized an instant familiarity with someone on your first encounter? Were you unable to deny the bond between the two of you, even though acknowledgement seemed it might disrupt your life or, at least, the view of the world that you currently held and were comfortable with?

Samhain nears, the time the veil between worlds is its most sheer. Sacred Vow is a story of parallel universes and the multidimensional nature of our loves and our relationships. We are coming to the season of the year where we traditionally enjoy many of our celebrations of giving, of love, and of communion--Thanksgiving, Chanukah, The Hajj, Christmas, Kwanzaa. The rift in the Collective Consciousness that is so central in Sacred Vow is occurring because people in the worlds of the characters are dissociating from one another, from the world they live, from other life forms, and from the effect their own thoughts have on their reality. Our world is in much the same state.

In honor of the upcoming period of time so energetically significant to our culture and our psyche, Asheville author, CG Walters has been inspired to offer anyone interested a full length FREE PDF copy of his visionary novel, Sacred Vow. Go to www.cgwalters.com/spirit_story.htm click the link to send an email request.

Ian Sarin encounters such a familiar, except she is not of his world. Without his understanding, he is drawn into her world and into various other lives they are sharing even before he was aware of her. Much to Ian’s amazement, he finds out that the bond between them is a key element needed to heal a growing disintegration in the Collective Consciousness that makes up all reality—a breach that threatens us all. As Ian learns the part he and Katerina are destined to play and the vast ties they have, he and those around him come to realize that life and the world before them was never as one dimensional or isolated as they had imagined.

Monthly Aspectarian "..shares with us the magic of a loving commitment that spans time and the understanding that such a commitment needs to be held sacred. http://www.lightworks.com/MonthlyAspectarian/2007/March/inprint.htm

"Sacred Vow is a metaphysical novel about a man who responds to the mysterious call of a woman, opening the way to redefinition of both himself and his understanding of the world around him. He takes his first steps on a journey to accept the world around him as a place to live, not simply a place to survive day-to-day. Sacred Vow is both a narrative and the means for the author to communicate a positive message about life and fully integrating the most into each moment. Highly recommended."

I am looking for a massage therapist who also does energy work, and ideally this would be somebody who does a type of restorative massage. I recently had surgery, and I'm looking for a therapist who can help my body, mind and soul get a jump start on their healing processes.

Does anybody know of a therapist who "does" post-surgical/restorative massage?

So many therapists, I don't know who to choose. I would really appreciate any recommendations.

-thank you

peace to you

The parade theme this year is 'creating community thru celebration' - let's start with a party!

We will have the first Art Party on Oct 28 - 12 - 7 PM, at Arts@People's own Kitty's. We will be making banners, assembling & painting the magic carpet and making the giant tassels. No artistic talent required, just enthusiasm. Please bring something to eat or drink and your creativity! Kid and new mom-friendly. If you would like directions, call Kitty at (828) 216 8815 or contact Torva at Torvawench@gmail.com.
Thanks!

I have a full weekend pass to the LEAF Festival (this weekend) for
sale. I bought it when they were only $98 (they are now $130!). I was
planning on camping with my daughter all weekend, but plans have
changed and I can only go for one day. So, if anyone would like to
buy it from me ($98, or best offer!), just say the word. Great music, arts, crafts,
dancing... and kids 9 and under are free!
Thanks!!

howdy y'all

just a friendly reminder that this friday, oct 12, we will once again be bringing the bass to bobo (hopefully with a couple extra subs this time!) - last month we were unfortunately playing the same night as the bassnectar show, so we're hoping for a few more heads this time since we won't have any west coast superstars in town to steal our thunder ;)

for the curious, check dubstep.fm for some nice streaming radio and a pretty wide variety of dubstep sounds....

peace & dub!

Here are some highlights from the Asheville fire troupe, Unifire Theatre at the Lexington Ave Arts and Fun fest in Asheville, NC. We went for a lighthearted somewhat silly show after last years dark and spooky Voodoo King, ergo the name Out of the Box. You can catch performance dates at our website www.unifiredance.com Hope you like it and stay tuned until the end to see my new fire toy...the amazing buckets of death.

The ‘60s, Hot Tubs, Massage, and Watsu

My partner and I grew up in the ‘60s, spent time in California, and so we really enjoy soaking in hot tubs with friends. However, we’re now in a different time and place, where this does not seem to be the norm. We miss the good times and camaraderie.

So, are there any other “hippies” out there who like soaking in warm water? Anyone else have their own hot tub? Anyone else enjoy visiting Shoji Spa or Hot Springs, NC? Anyone else love getting mellowed out on massage and Watsu?

Hey fellow tribers,
I have a desperate plea for you. I just found out the Queens of the Stone Age show coming up on Septmebr 24th at The Orange Peel in Asheville is already sold out!!!

I didn't get my tickets ahead of time because the show is on the eve of my birthday and I though I might be getting treated, but now they are gone and I am SO SAD! My whole birthday plan revolved around going to that show!

Please, if you or anyone you know has extra tickets or is connected in any way to get tickets, I need two (one for my birthday date and one for me, of course!). Thanks so much!

Looking 4 Perfromers 4 Tate ST. Fest in Greensboro

Once again it's that other time of the year that we Greensboro residents celebrate Tate St. Festival, and this time around it's carnivale themed. Anybody interested in boothing or performing should call Jamie Coggins at 336-314-0715. She is looking for tallented people to entertain the family audience of the street. If your a juggler, a burner, a drummer, or you have some other special carnival talent, you should call Jamie immediately, due to spaces being filled up. Tate St. Fest attracts hundreds of audience members, and is a blast every time. I totally recomend you all come out!
-Smokin' McQueen

P.S. you should get in touch with Jamie this weekend before she starts her massive P.R. campaign and finishes the flyer with the list of all the perfromers.

The company that is helping her publish the book sent her a mockup that she is not happy with. It's very "Cartoony" and she's looking more for a medieval oil painting style.

I can provide contact details if you can think of a few people that may be interested in this.

Hey all!

My sweetie and I are coming to live in Asheville for a while and it's becoming pretty difficult to rent a house from afar (we are about 8 hours away).

We are looking for a place to stay for a few nights while we look for a house to rent! Preferrably a pet-free environment.

If you can help please let us know!
